Gurugram, Nov. 8 -- The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has directed the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) to initiate prosecution against officials, including supervisory officers, over repeated failures to control road dust, after an inspection found 174 violations on roads maintained by the civic body. In its November 6 order, CAQM directed MCG to file a complaint before the jurisdictional judicial magistrate and submit an action-taken report with supporting records. The direction followed repeated inspections and a November 3 hearing, during which MCG acknowledged shortcomings in road sweeping. Civic officials said mechanical sweeping machines were operating at 50-60% efficiency, which they proposed to increase to 80% by mid-November. They also promised improvements in road cleaning and waste collection. The commission said these assurances did not address violations already documented. During an October 14 inspection, CAQM examined 52 road stretches covering approximately 104km under MCG and the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA). It recorded 258 violations, including road dust, construction and demolition waste, damaged footpaths and potholes. Of these, 174 were on 56km of MCG roads and 84 on 48km maintained by GMDA. As of October 13, the commission had also received 1,135 complaints concerning MCG and 183 concerning GMDA through social media. Earlier inspections revealed persistent lapses. The order also cited MCG's submission that disciplinary proceedings had been sought against an executive engineer over lapses in mechanical sweeping. MCG officials did not respond to calls and messages seeking a comment....
