Palwal: Woman, son found dead; dowry case filed
Gurugram, Aug. 22 -- Police in Palwal have registered a case of murder, criminal conspiracy, dowry death and other offences against 11 people after a 25-year-old woman and her one-and-a-half-month-old son were allegedly strangled to death, officials said on Friday.
The woman's family has accused her in-laws of prolonged harassment over dowry and alleged that they had been demanding an SUV. The 11 people named in the FIR, accessed by HT, include the woman's husband, his parents, siblings, relatives and the head of Rajpura village.
According to the complaint, Sagufta married 27-year-old Sohil Khan in 2023. Her father, Yakeen Khan, alleged that soon after the marriage, she was repeatedly assaulted over demands for a Scorpio SUV. The complaint alleges that the demand resurfaced after Sagufta gave birth. Her in-laws allegedly assaulted her and demanded an SUV.
A panchayat was subsequently held, following which the family alleged that an air conditioner and Rs.50,000 were given. On August 18, Sagufta allegedly contacted her family and told them that her husband and in-laws were again beating her, according to the complaint cited in the FIR.
On Thursday, the family was informed that Sagufta and her son had died. Relatives allegedly noticed marks around the necks of the victims and approached the police. Inspector Hari Kishan, station house officer of Sadar police station, Palwal, said Sagufta's husband was the prime suspect and had been taken into custody for questioning. He said Sohil allegedly tried to flee but injured his leg after jumping from the third-floor terrace of the house.
"Prima facie, we have recovered a scarf, which we think was used to strangle the woman," Kishan said, adding that Sohil would be formally arrested once doctors declare him medically fit. "The case appears to be murder, but the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the postmortem examination. Further action will be decided based on the autopsy findings," another police officer said.
Police have invoked provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to murder, criminal conspiracy, dowry death, cruelty by a husband or his relatives, voluntarily causing hurt, unlawful assembly and rioting. The investigation is underway, with police examining the allegations....
