MCG flags 5 defects in Rs.3cr road recarpeting
Gurugram, Oct. 28 -- The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has identified five deficiencies in the Rs.3-crore road recarpeting project in South City 1, including inadequate bitumen content and insufficient layer thickness, after residents complained that newly repaired stretches were already deteriorating.
Following an inspection on Monday, MCG issued a letter to the contractor on Tuesday, directing it to rectify the shortcomings within three days, according to a communication seen by HT.
Recarpeting of internal roads in blocks I to Q began around October 8 and is scheduled for completion by November 7. During a spot check on Tuesday, HT found loose gravel, uneven patches and scattered stones across several stretches, with dust accumulating along the roads.
Residents alleged that the work was substandard and had worsened commuting conditions. They said sections of the freshly recarpeted roads were already breaking up, despite repeated requests for durable repairs. "These roads were taken up for repair after much request, and even then, within just weeks, the gravel is coming up. No proper work is done on the roads, and even the waste from the construction and demolition (C&D) debris affects commuters every day," said Sagar Bhola, president of the South City 1 residents' welfare association.
Tanuveer Kaur Sabarwal, the RWA's joint secretary, said, "The older roads were better than the new ones. They have started breaking off in parts."
Residents also alleged that poorly laid bitumen had caused cracks to develop. A group of them met MCG joint commissioner Ashish Singla on Friday, seeking intervention. Singla directed executive engineer Sandeep Dhundwal to examine the complaints, following which Dhundwal asked officials concerned to inspect the work.
Their report flagged improper scraping of existing surfaces, inadequate brooming and cleaning, insufficient thickness of the bitumen macadam layer, uneven road levels and inadequate bitumen content in the mix.
Dhundwal said the contractor has been given three days to address the deficiencies. "If the contractor fails to take corrective measures, appropriate remedial action will be taken against him as per the contract norms," he said....
