Gurugram, May 20 -- The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has announced an enforcement drive to curb misuse of drinking water, targeting illegal connections, defective meters and unauthorised water supply across domestic, commercial, institutional and industrial categories. The campaign aims to strengthen water conservation and ensure compliance with municipal water supply regulations amid growing concerns over rising demand and wastage. According to a public notice issued by the corporation, strict action will be taken against consumers violating water usage norms, including imposition of heavy penalties, disconnection of supply and other measures. Under the enforcement mechanism, consumers found using defective water meters will be fined Rs.1,000. If faulty meters are not repaired or replaced within the stipulated period, the water connection will be disconnected. Consumers misusing potable water for non-essential activities - including washing vehicles and cleaning roads - will initially face a penalty of Rs.2,000, with repeat violations resulting in disconnection without prior notice, officials said. Use of potable water in construction activities is also prohibited. Officials said violators will face immediate disconnection, with only treated water supplied from sewage treatment plants (STPs) permitted for construction purposes. MCG commissioner Pradeep Dahiya said, "Drinking water is a precious public resource and cannot be wasted for avoidable purposes. Citizens must use water responsibly and comply with conservation guidelines." The corporation has also launched a special drive against illegal and unauthorised water connections. Dahiya said consumers using unregistered connections or drawing water without approval would face disconnection during the campaign, urging residents to register connections at the earliest opportunity. All consumers with old, damaged or non-functional meters have been directed to repair or replace them immediately in accordance with policy guidelines and to update meter details on the MCG official website to ensure accurate billing records. To strengthen public participation in monitoring water misuse, the corporation has issued dedicated complaint and helpline numbers. "Residents can report incidents of illegal water connections or misuse through WhatsApp number 7840001817 or the toll-free helpline 1800-180-1817." Citizens may also approach the concerned junior engineer (JE) or assistant engineer offices in their respective areas," said Dahiya....
