Govt reclaims C Delhi polo ground
New Delhi, June 14 -- A day after a Delhi court refused to grant a stay on the eviction of the Jaipur Polo Ground and asked the Centre to file a response to a plea by the Indian Polo Association (IPA) challenging the eviction order, the Centre's land and development office on Saturday took possession of the 15-acre land.
"We've taken possession of the land and sealed the premises. There is no permanent structure on this site," an official said, asking not to be named, adding that higher authorities would decide next action.
On Friday, a vacation bench of Judge Dhirendra Rana of the Patiala House Courts declined to intervene while hearing the IPA's petition challenging an eviction order issued on May 20, which had directed vacation of the 15.20-acre Jaipur Polo Grounds by June 4. "Keeping in view the judicial discipline and propriety, I am not inclined to stay the execution of the impugned order even till the next date," the court said, directing Centre to respond to the appeal and application under Section 9(3) of the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, 1971, before next hearing on June 17.
The matter reached the district court after the Delhi High Court, on June 8, disposed of the IPA's petition directing the district and sessions judge to rule on the stay application by June 10. That same day, a vacation bench of justice Neena Bansal Krishna questioned the Centre's move against nearly 200-year-old properties - including the Delhi Gymkhana Club, Delhi Race Club, and Jaipur Polo Grounds. "What are you going to do with all these heritage structures? Even Gymkhana is a heritage structure. Make 20-storey buildings?" the court observed, noting these spaces were a vital "breather" amid the pollution.
The reclamation follows similar action against the United News of India premises and the Delhi Gymkhana Club. While authorities cite public and strategic needs, occupants argue these properties serve institutional, sporting, and heritage functions. IPA counsel Major Nirvikar Singh said the association's legal position would be "duly articulated before the appropriate forum in accordance with law"....
