Gurugram, Aug. 28 -- The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) started repairing the sinkhole at Iffco Chowk on Thursday after diverting the sewage flowing into the damaged drain on Wednesday night. GMDA officials said around 20 metres of the damaged pipeline will be replaced to prevent further leakage. The sinkhole formed after a portion of the sewage drain collapsed on the Iffco Chowk service lane from Delhi towards Jaipur on Tuesday afternoon, causing panic among commuters and traffic congestion. Officials said two service lanes were barricaded following the incident. A senior GMDA official aware of the matter said, "We have started the work to repair the damaged sewer pipeline after diverting the sewage flowing into the drain. The sinkhole is being dewatered and we will replace around 20 metres of pipe at the damaged location. We will also repair another 100 metres of pipeline on this stretch to strengthen the pipeline at this junction." Meanwhile, officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said they would repair the damaged road stretch after the drain was repaired. They said water was still flowing into the sinkhole despite the diversion and the repair could take some time....
