Garbage heaps mar cleanliness drive in Ggm
Gurugram, Nov. 5 -- Heaps of garbage, construction debris and road dust continue to blight neighbourhoods and roads across Gurugram with just a few days left for Diwali, prompting complaints about the city's festive-season cleanliness.
Residents have reported illegal dumping, overflowing collection points and poor sanitation in Sector 23A, Tigra village, Sector 46, Sector 67, Sector 70 and along Southern Peripheral Road and Golf Course Extension Road. They said complaints to the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) had brought little lasting improvement. Residents also reported problems along internal roads.
Bhawani Shankar Tripathi, a Sector 23A resident, said three garbage-vulnerable points in the neighbourhood remained uncleared unless residents repeatedly approached officials or posted complaints online.
"Why do they need reminders from residents on a daily basis?" he asked.
Tripathi said short-term drives could not solve the problem without action against illegal dumping and dust pollution.
In Sector 46, residents said garbage and overflowing sewage had rendered parts of a service road along Netaji Subhash Marg difficult to use.
"The service lane is either littered with garbage or inundated with sewage. What is the point of having a service lane if commuters cannot even use it?" a resident said.
Riya Mishra, a Sector 50 resident, said heaps of waste near Tigra village attracted stray cattle and produced a foul smell. She reported similar conditions near Kanhai villag.
"The situation is extremely poor, and despite the repeated concerns, there seems to be no solution in sight," she said.
In Sector 14, resident Kalyan Singh said additional sanitation workers had made little visible difference.
"While we are busy decorating and cleaning our homes, the question is who will take care of the city?" he asked.
MCG commissioner Pradeep Dahiya said the civic body was taking enforcement action against those violating pollution-control and sanitation norms.
"Open burning, improper disposal of C&D waste, transportation of uncovered construction material and non-compliance with dust-control measures will not be tolerated," he said.
Another MCG official said the corporation had increased sanitation staffing to up to 50 sweepers per ward and was taking action against illegal dumping.
The official said the impact of increased staffing would become visible soon....
