Experts visit Corbett to study human-wildlife conflict measures
Rudrapur, May 22 -- Ahead of the upcoming International Big Cat Alliance Summit, a team of global wildlife experts visited the Corbett Tiger Reserve for a three-day study tour to understand the measures adopted by the reserve to mitigate human-wildlife conflict, officials said on Thursday.
According to officials, five teams of the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) are currently visiting different big cat reserves across India ahead of the summit scheduled to be held in New Delhi on June 1 and 2.
Director of Corbett Tiger Reserve Saket Badola said, "A team of global wildlife experts of IBCA visited CTR for three days beginning Monday. The team particularly came here to study the measures adopted by us to mitigate man and tiger conflicts."
The delegation comprised experts from Australia and Hungary and was led by Sanjay Shukla. During the visit, the team held meetings with CTR officials and undertook field visits inside the reserve to gain firsthand experience of conservation practices and conflict mitigation strategies.
Officials said similar teams are visiting reserves associated with other big cats including lions, leopards, snow leopards and cheetahs across the country.
The International Big Cat Alliance was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2023.
The alliance, headquartered in New Delhi, currently has around 95 member countries.
Badola said the alliance focuses on conservation and habitat protection of seven major big cats -tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar and puma -besides curbing illegal wildlife trade and poaching.
Officials added that discussions during the summit will focus on global cooperation for big cat conservation and strategies to reduce human-animal conflict....
