Dehradun, June 6 -- A group of environmentalists, scientists and policy experts has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to introduce a mandatory carbon footprint declaration system for all commercial products sold in India, arguing that the measure would empower consumers to make environmentally responsible choices and accelerate the country's climate goals. The recommendation was sent to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) on World Environment Day following a round table conference on carbon footprints jointly organised by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts and the Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation Organisation (HESCO) on June 2. Padma Bhushan and Padmashri recipient and founder of HESCO Anil Prakash Joshi said, "Under the proposed framework, manufacturers would be legally required to disclose the carbon footprint associated with their products, including emissions generated during manufacturing, transportation and usage". Experts backing the proposal said in the letter that mandatory carbon disclosure would strengthen the government's LiFE Mission by encouraging sustainable consumption patterns and incentivising industries to adopt cleaner technologies.
