New Delhi, June 8 -- At least eight residents were rescued while two pet dogs died after a fire broke out in a multi-storey residential building in south Delhi's New Friends Colony on Sunday afternoon, police said, adding, no human casualty was reported. Five fire tenders worked for half an hour to douse the fire that originated at the first floor, blocked the central staircase, and left the eight residents and the two pets trapped on the upper floors, officials said. They rescued the dogs too, but could not resuscitate them. A Delhi Fire Services (DFS) official said, "The fire began in an air-conditioner on the first floor of the building and spread to other domestic articles. The building has a basement, ground and four upper floors. Eight people - four children, two women and two men - were rescued from the second and third floors." Residents of the first floor were not present at the time of the incident, locals said. The fire control room received a call at 3.39pm regarding a fire in a house in New Friends Colony. The caller informed that some people were trapped inside the building. Five fire tenders along with rescue teams were dispatched from Mathura Road, Sandafjung and Nehru Place fire stations. The fire was brought under control by 4.05pm, the DFS officer said. Deputy commissioner of police (southeast) Hemant Tiwari said they were informed about the fire at around 3.45pm. Emergency resuscitation and first aid were administered to the rescued dogs. "However, one canine died of suffocation, while the other surviving dog was rushed to a nearby veterinary hospital for critical care, but succumbed," he added. Police said the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Chitra Jain, president of the New Friends Colony, RWA, said, " The fire is suspected to have started due to a short circuit."...
