3 relatives held for abetment after Gr Noida family suicide
Greater Noida, Oct. 19 -- Police on Sunday arrested three members of a family on charges of abetment to suicide, a day after a man, his wife and their three children were found dead at their home in a village in Greater Noida, with investigators suspecting that the man poisoned his family before taking his own life.
Police said four audio recordings recovered from the 37-year-old man's mobile phone appeared to indicate that he was distressed over a property dispute involving his sisters. The recordings allegedly named his elder sister, her husband and his younger sister, who have all been arrested.
The deceased included the man's 35-year-old wife and their children, aged 11, seven and three. Their bodies were discovered on Saturday morning in Rabupura after a friend of the eldest child arrived to accompany him to school. When nobody responded, the friend entered the house and found the family lying unconscious in a room, police said.
The bodies were sent for post-mortem examination, and viscera samples have been preserved for forensic analysis to establish the cause of death.
"During the investigation, it emerged that the man's 45-year-old sister, a Delhi resident, allegedly influenced their mother and got the property in which the family lived transferred to her name last year. The man was upset over this," Greater Noida police said in a statement.
Rabupura station house officer Shyambabu Shukla said four audio messages, each around two minutes long, were recovered from the deceased man's phone. In them, he allegedly blamed his elder sister, her 50-year-old husband and his 32-year-old younger sister for his decision to take the extreme step. He did not blame his mother, who also lives in the house, the officer said.
Police also examined CCTV footage from cameras near the house. Investigators found no movement of any other person linked to the incident, the officer said. The three suspects, all residents of Delhi, were arrested on Sunday in a case registered at Rabupura police station for abetment to suicide, Shukla said.
Initially, police suspected that the family had died of food poisoning after eating noodles before going to sleep. However, the food safety department's inquiry did not establish that explanation, and investigators noted that symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea had not been reported.
Police now suspect that the man mixed a poisonous substance into food served to his family....
