3 die as truck plows into people over 2km stretch
Gurugram, March 24 -- At least three individuals were killed and four others were critically injured when a speeding truck lost control and mowed down commuters over a stretch of two kilometres on Delhi-Rohtak and Bypass roads in Jhajjar on Monday, police said.
According to police, the truck bearing a Haryana registration was coming from Kherki Daula in Gurugram and was headed to Kirti Nagar in Jhajjar. The incident took place between 12.30pm and 1.30pm, said Inspector Jamil Ahmed, station house officer of Bahadurgarh City police station.
A senior police official said the truck first mowed down Ashok Kumar, 35, and his nephew Shambhu Kumar, 24, at the busy Mama Chowk on the Delhi-Rohtak road when they were crossing it. The duo, who lived in Kacchi Colony in Delhi and worked in a factory in Jhajjar, were killed on the spot. "Their bodies were mutilated after being run over by the front as well as rear wheels of the truck," the officer said.
"The locals and commuters raised an alarm, but the truck driver accelerated and managed to flee from the spot in his vehicle and turned towards Sector 9 instead of going towards Kirti Nagar," he added.
Investigators said that about two kilometres ahead, the truck hit an auto-rickshaw, causing it to overturn and injure three occupants, including driver Jai Vir of Ashok Vihar; Krishan, 31; and his wife Prem, 27, from Linepar in Bahadurgarh. Shortly after, the truck struck a motorcycle near the Sector 9 roundabout on Bypass Road, on which Yogender Kumar, 36, from Kanonda in Jhajjar, and his nephew Parveen Kumar, 23, were travelling.
Yogender was run over and killed on the spot, while Parveen sustained critical injuries, police said. Officers cited witnesses' claims that after hitting multiple vehicles and pedestrians, the driver attempted to escape.
The truck finally stopped after crashing into pillars of a flyover near the second accident spot, police said. The driver, Sushil Kumar, 29, originally from Chhapra town in the Saran district of Bihar, abandoned the vehicle and fled.
Police said locals and commuters alerted the police control room and helped rush the injured to the government hospital in Ballabgarh. Prem was later shifted to PGIMS Rohtak due to her critical condition, while the others are undergoing treatment at Civil Hospital, Jhajjar.
"Four of the commuters were critically injured, and of them, one woman had to be shifted to PGIMS Rohtak after initial treatment at the government hospital in Bahadurgarh, looking at their critical condition," said Ahmed.
Ahmed said Sushil was caught by police near Bahadurgarh within a couple of hours of the incident. "He had fled from the second accident spot on Bypass Road near Sector 9 after abandoning the truck.
"An FIR is being registered under sections 106 (causing death by negligence), 125(a) (causing hurt by an act endangering life or personal safety of others), and 281 (rash driving on a public road) of BNS, after which Sushil will be formally arrested," he said.
Inspector Ahmed said prima facie it appeared that Sushil was speeding. "However, he has alleged that the brakes failed," he said. "We will write to the Haryana transport department for carrying out a thorough technical probe to ascertain if there was any technical failure in the truck," he added....
