New Delhi, Aug. 9 -- An 18-year-old boy was swept away in a drain at Priyanka Camp Nala in Madanpur Khadar, Southeast Delhi about 8pm on Friday as heavy rain lashed city, police said. The whereabouts of the victim, later identified as Ankit, remained unknown on Saturday, with search and rescue operations continuing, police said. A call was made to the Kalindi Kunj police station at 8:31pm and the Sarita Vihar police station at 8:54pm. Police said 23-year-old Manish, Ankit's friend who made the call, told them Ankit was returning from Noida when he slipped and fell into the nala and was swept away by the strong flow. "Immediate search and rescue operations were launched with the assistance of the DDMA East Rescue Team and Delhi Fire Service (Fire Tender WT-74). Despite sustained efforts, the missing person could not be traced so far. Search and rescue operations are continuing," police said in a statement on Saturday. The incident came as five consecutive days of rain pushed Delhi's August rainfall to 230.1mm till 5.30pm Saturday, 98% of the Indian Meteorological Department's (IMD) long period average (LPA) of 233.1mm. With rain likely to continue over the coming week, the monthly total is expected to exceed the LPA. Delhi recorded 400.1mm in August last year. Between 8.30am and 5.30pm Saturday, Pushp Vihar recorded the highest rainfall at 65.5mm, followed by Najafgarh (26mm), Ayannagar (16mm) and Delhi Ridge (9.4mm). Safdarjung recorded 4.4mm. Between 8:30am Friday and 8:30am Saturday, Delhi received 98.7mm, its highest 24-hour August rainfall since August 1, 2024, when it recorded 107.6mm. Lighter rain on Saturday brought some relief, though Rohtak road, Mehrauli-Badarpur road and parts of Sadar Bazar remained waterlogged. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi received nine complaints of fallen trees from Rohini, Civil lines, Ibrahimpur, Gautam Nagar, Sighada Chowk, East of Kailash, Paschim Vihar and Model Town, with two from Model Town.
