'VSM awardee did not deserve to die this way'
Dehradun, April 1 -- "It was the most unfortunate way he could have died," said his brother-in-law, Rakesh Upreti, recalling Brigadier (retd) MK Joshi, who was killed on Monday morning after being hit by a stray bullet during crossfire between occupants of two SUVs engaged in a high-speed chase following a brawl at a club the previous night.
"Joshi was commissioned into the Indian Army in 1973 and retired in 2009 after serving the nation for over three decades with distinction in the Corps of Military Intelligence. He was stationed in Jammu & Kashmir and the North East during his service. He was also awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) for his exemplary service.
Upreti, who was accompanying him on the morning walk when the incident occurred, said he also had a four-year stint with the PMO.
"His son, Mohit Joshi, is a commander in the Indian Navy and is currently deployed in Mauritius on deputation. He has left for India after being informed about the incident," Upreti said.
While his daughter works as a journalist in Goa, Joshi and his wife recently visited her and returned to Dehradun with her.
Originally from Almora in the Kumaon region, Brig (retd) Joshi had been living in Tula's Greens society near Johri village in Dehradun since his retirement.
"His last rites will be performed on Wednesday at the Tapkeshwar cremation ground in the Garhi Cantt area with full military honours," Upreti said.
"We still haven't been able to come to terms with the fact that he is no more," he added....
