World Heart Day: Protecting young hearts from early risks

				India, Sept. 29 -- E
very year, World Heart Day reminds us of one simple truth: a healthy heart means a healthy life. Yet, heart disease remains one of the most common health problems across the world and in India. As a cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon, I often meet patients who come at a stage when the disease has already advanced. Many of them could have avoided surgery or serious complications if they had acted earlier. Heart disease usually does not appear suddenly - it develops silently over time. Risk factors such as smoking, uncontrolled blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, stress, and lack of exercise slowly weaken the heart and blood vessels.
The encouraging fact is that more than 70% of heart diseases can be prevented. The steps are not difficult - walking 30 minutes daily, eating home-cooked balanced meals, avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight, and going for routine heart check-ups. These small habits create a big impact on heart health.
It is also important to recognise warning signs. Red flags include chest pain, shortness of breath, extreme fatigue, sudden dizziness, or swelling in the legs. If you or your loved ones experience these symptoms, consult a heart specialist without delay. Modern cardiac surgery and interventions have advanced remarkably, and with timely treatment, patients can return to normal, active lives.
On this World Heart Day, let us take a pledge: To care for our hearts. To encourage our families and friends to adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle. To not ignore early signs and seek timely medical help. Your heart beats for you every second - take a moment today to care for it....
