World Heart Day: Protecting young hearts from early risks
	
		
				India, Sept. 29 -- World Heart Day 2025, observed on September 29 (today) with the theme Don't Miss a Beat, reminds us to stay vigilant about cardiovascular health and focus on prevention, early detection, and timely care.
Traditionally seen in older adults, heart attacks are now alarmingly affecting people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. Sedentary lifestyle, excessive junk food intake, smoking, alcohol, and lack of physical activity contribute to early heart problems. Additionally, genetic predisposition and conditions like diabetes and hypertension make young individuals vulnerable. This rising trend highlights the urgent need for proactive heart care, even at a younger age.
Stress is a silent killer that significantly impacts heart health. Chronic stress elevates blood pressure, increases cortisol levels and triggers unhealthy habits like overeating and smoking. The pandemic further worsened the situation - prolonged isolation, anxiety, and even the infection itself left lasting damage to the cardiovascular system. Post-Covid complications such as myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) and clot formation have been reported, stressing the importance of timely cardiac evaluation.
To maintain a healthy heart, lifestyle modification is key.
Warning Signs: Shortness of breath, chest pain or pressure, palpitations, fatigue, unexplained sweating and dizziness should not be ignored. These may be early indicators of heart trouble requiring medical attention.
Surgery is considered when lifestyle changes, medications and non-invasive treatments are no longer effective in controlling heart disease. The choice of procedure depends on the severity and type of condition. Angioplasty with stent placement is often the first option to open narrowed or blocked arteries and restore blood supply. In cases of multiple or severe blockages, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is recommended to reroute blood flow. For structural issues, valve repair or replacement may be required.
