Why cancer awareness must start at a young age
India, Nov. 7 -- Cancer is no longer a health concern that people should associate only with older age. With cancer being diagnosed in adolescents and younger adults, experts emphasise the importance of awareness, recognising warning signs and seeking timely medical evaluation. Cancer can develop at any stage of life. According to India's National Cancer Registry Programme, cancers among individuals aged 15-39 include breast, thyroid, oral, cervical, ovarian and certain blood cancers. These findings highlight why age alone should never be considered a reason to dismiss persistent or unusual symptoms.
Cancer develops due to a complex interaction of genetic, environmental and lifestyle-related factors. While increasing age remains a major risk factor, younger individuals may also be affected. Factors such as tobacco consumption, alcohol use, obesity, physical inactivity, unhealthy dietary habits, certain viral infections and environmental exposures can contribute to cancer risk. Family history and inherited genetic mutations may also increase susceptibility to specific cancers. It is important to understand that having one or more risk factors does not mean a person will develop cancer. Similarly, people without identifiable risk factors can also be diagnosed.
Busy schedules and demanding lifestyles often lead younger individuals to overlook changes in their health. Symptoms may initially appear minor but deserve medical attention when they persist or worsen.
One of the biggest challenges in younger patients is delayed diagnosis. Early evaluation can help identify suspicious changes and ensure that appropriate investigations are undertaken. Depending on the symptoms and clinical findings, doctors may recommend blood tests, imaging, endoscopy, biopsy or other specialised investigations. Screening recommendations should be based on age, family history, individual risk factors and established medical guidelines. Not every young person requires routine cancer screening, but persistent symptoms should never be ignored.
Although not all cancers are preventable, several measures can help reduce the risk:
Cancer care requires a multidisciplinary approach involving medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and other specialists. We focus on a comprehensive approach to cancer care, bringing together clinical expertise, diagnostic support and individualised treatment planning.
The message is simple: Cancer does not always wait for old age, and awareness should not either. Recognising symptoms, understanding personal risk and seeking timely medical advice can make an important difference in the journey towards better health....
