When protests sparked friendships
India, Aug. 2 -- Some friendships begin over coffee or in college canteens. Others, apparently, are forged while dodging lathis, sharing water after tear gas and shouting "bhaago!" This Friendship Day, youngsters recall the bonds they formed with strangers during the recently concluded student-led protests at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.
Delhi University student Pari Tripathi arrived alone on July 20, but left with a new friend, Madhurita, after the two held onto the same boundary railing during the chaos. "Turns out we go to the same college and are in the same batch. She is the Indian Music Society president and I am the Dance Society treasurer, and neither of us had a clue until a tear gas cloud introduced us," she says.
For Priyangshu Naskar, friendship came in the form of Navish and four others who pulled him away during a lathi charge. The group hid behind a shut tea stall, bonded over music and history, and later celebrated together. "Today, we text all day long in our WhatsApp group chat," he says.
Lifestyle influencer Yash Chandra, meanwhile, met fellow protesters through an Instagram call-out. "We went to support the protest, but by the end it felt like a hangout," he says, adding, "Now, we talk daily and are booking a farmhouse for a Friendship Day party!"...
