India, Feb. 28 -- The word alpine usually evokes images of towering mountains and postcard-perfect views. But the term 'alpine divorce' paints a far darker picture. While there is no formal definition of the term, an alpine divorce refers to the act of ending a relationship by abandoning a partner in a remote or dangerous mountainous location, often during a hike. The person is allegedly left to navigate freezing temperatures, harsh weather or treacherous terrain alone. The phrase draws on the imagery of isolated alpine regions, where extreme weather and rugged landscapes can make survival challenging. The term traces back to an 1893 short story titled An Alpine Divorce by Robert Barr, in which an unhappy husband plots to kill his wife during a trip to the Swiss Alps. What began as scattered social media posts has now snowballed into a viral trend, with users sharing unsettling personal stories online. "Just saw a Tiktok of a girl whose bf abandoned her during a hike in the woods. The comments were all about how this is a thing multiple men do... All I can say is wtf is wrong with men? I'm mortified," wrote a user on X. Another wrote: "There's a video of me hiking in the Scottish Highlands trying to make the best out of my trip while the guy I was in a situationship with was miles ahead of me."...
