India, Feb. 26 -- If your Instagram feed is filled with fizzy pink drinks promising better sleep, you're not alone. The 'magnesium mocktail' or viral 'sleepy girl' drink is trending again after Healthline (health and wellness publisher) recently shared a medically reviewed take on the fad. Typically made with tart cherry juice, magnesium powder and sparkling water, this pink drink claims to promote relaxation and sleep by supporting melatonin production and calming the nervous system. Since wellness drinks are increasingly sold as quick fixes for sleep, immunity and nutrient gaps, we ask experts whether they truly live up to the hype or not? According to dietitian Archana Batra magnesium is a key mineral that activates the brain's primary calming neurotransmitter, GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) which helps the body shift from a stressed, alert state into a relaxed "rest and repair" mode. However she recommends simple, food-first recipes to boost magnesium intake naturally. Her first favourite is the banana-kiwi calm mocktail; bananas bring magnesium and vitamin B6 for melatonin production, while kiwis add antioxidants and potassium for better sleep. Another one of her recommendation is an avocado-spinach sleep smoothie. Avocados provide healthy fats and magnesium, while spinach is among the most magnesium-rich greens. While wellness drinks work wonders for some, others may notice little to no change. "If someone has nutrient deficiency, such as low magnesium, B12, or iron, targeted supplementation or fortified drinks may help bridge the gap. Similarly, ingredients like probiotics can support gut health, and antioxidant-rich components may contribute to overall well-being. However, these beverages are not quick fixes or substitutes for balanced meals, medical treatment, or consistent lifestyle habits," says Dr Divya Gopal, additional director of internal medicine at Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital. Dr Priyanka Kisan Pokhariyal, consultant physician, internal medicine, Saifee Hospital, Mumbai explains, "By incorporating beverages rich in antioxidants and minerals we provide the body with the building blocks needed for cellular repair and nervous system balance. In essence, a well-crafted wellness drink acts as a daily recalibration tool for the brain and body alike. But, in many cases, their benefits are modest and work best when paired with adequate sleep, stress management, and a nutrient-dense diet." Ultimately, wellness drinks can complement a healthy lifestyle, but they are unlikely to transform health on their own....
