Vietnamese waiter defends Indian woman after she faces backlash over veg food query
India, June 7 -- A viral video of an Indian tourist repeatedly checking whether her food in Vietnam was vegetarian has triggered a wider conversation online about dietary restrictions, cultural differences and hospitality. The clip, filmed at Hanoi's popular Train Street, has amassed nearly 13 million views and initially drew mixed reactions, with some users accusing the woman of making an unnecessary fuss. However, the Vietnamese waiter seen in the video later stepped in to defend her.
The video was shared on an Instagram page managed by Harshada and her husband, Pratik. In the clip, Harshada is seen sitting at a cafe table and asking the waiter, "Only vegetables? No meat, no fish, no egg?" The waiter patiently reassures her that the food contains no non-vegetarian items. He adds, "I know you are nervous, but I swear it is only vegetables."
While many viewers found the exchange heartwarming, others criticised the woman for repeatedly questioning the waiter.
Responding to the clip, the server (@_thomas.wgz) commented, "Hi, I'm the server featured in that video. I feel truly honoured to welcome valued guests to our restaurant. Our job is to do our best to meet our customers' needs, and I did not find her requests bothersome at all."
He added, "I understood that she simply wanted to make sure the food she ordered was prepared as she expected. To me, it was a completely ordinary and understandable situation-nothing more than a normal interaction between a customer and a server."
Harshada replied, "No wayyy! I never in my wildest dreams did I think this would reach you. Thank you so much for commenting and adding context to our conversation. Truly grateful!"
The waiter responded, "Welcome Hanoi 1975s again madame. It's my pleasure to serve you."
Recalling the interaction, Harshada told HT, "The interaction was completely friendly and respectful from both sides. We respected him throughout the conversation, and he showed us the same kindness and patience in return."...
