Varicose veins: Know the signs and your treatment options
India, Aug. 2 -- Your legs support you through long hours at work, household chores and everyday activities. So, when they begin to ache, feel unusually heavy, or develop visible, bulging veins, it's worth paying attention. Although many people consider varicose veins to be only a cosmetic issue, they may also indicate an underlying circulation problem that requires medical attention. Varicose veins occur when the valves within the veins weaken or stop working properly. Instead of moving efficiently back to the heart, blood can collect within the veins, causing them to widen, become twisted, and appear more prominently under the skin. Although these are mostly seen in the legs because of the effect of gravity, not always harmless. The good news is that recognising the symptoms early and seeking timely treatment can help prevent the condition from worsening, relieve discomfort, and reduce the risk of complications.
Healthy veins contain one-way valves that keep blood flowing towards the heart. When these valves weaken, blood collects in the veins, increasing pressure and causing them to stretch. Risk factors include increasing age, family history, pregnancy, obesity, prolonged sitting or standing, physical inactivity and hormonal changes. Although anyone can develop varicose veins, they are more common in women and people whose jobs involve long hours of standing.
Varicose veins may cause more than just visible changes in the legs. Watch out for symptoms such as:
Leaving varicose veins untreated may increase the risk of chronic swelling, skin damage, venous ulcers, bleeding, vein inflammation, and blood clots. Seek medical advice if you have persistent pain, swelling, changes in skin colour, bleeding, wounds that do not heal, sudden redness or warmth in the affected area, or if your symptoms start interfering with your daily routine.
Treatment depends on the severity of the condition. Conservative measures include compression stockings, regular exercise, leg elevation and weight management. When needed, minimally invasive procedures such as laser therapy, radiofrequency ablation and sclerotherapy can effectively treat affected veins.
Although varicose veins cannot always be avoided, healthy lifestyle choices can help reduce the chances of developing them and may slow their progression.
Varicose veins are more than a cosmetic concern. Recognising the warning signs and seeking timely medical care can relieve symptoms, improve circulation and reduce the risk of complications, helping you stay active and comfortable.
