Took court for a ride: SC fines Samay Raina Rs.3 lakh

he Supreme Court on Tuesday imposed a fine of Rs.3 lakh each on comedian and YouTuber Samay Raina and four others for failing to comply with its directions in a case concerning allegedly insensitive remarks about persons with disabilities, reports Bar and Bench.
The matter stems from a petition filed by Cure SMA India Foundation, which accused Raina of mocking persons with disabilities and making insensitive remarks about the high cost of treatment for Spinal Muscular Atrophy. The petition also sought regulations for online content that allegedly violates the right to life and dignity of persons with disabilities.
The court had earlier directed Raina and the other comedians to organise at least two events every month to raise funds for the treatment of persons with disabilities and encourage them to participate in their programmes. During Tuesday's hearing, however, the bench was informed that Raina had not reached out to the petitioner organisation or invited persons with disabilities to his show.
Pulling him up, the bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana said it had "reason to believe" that Raina had "taken the court for a ride" and "brazenly violated" its orders.
The court directed the Rs.3 lakh amount to be deposited within two weeks and asked all five to comply with its earlier directions. It also warned that further non-compliance could attract a substantially higher penalty: "If you don't comply we will add one zero". HTC...
