India, Sept. 27 -- Filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj's Dorothy, starring Keerthy Suresh, Rishikanth and Sananth, received a standing ovation at its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival on September 11. But after its India theatrical release onFriday, the film faced backlash on social media over its transgender and queer themes, with some users calling for a boycott. The action-comedy, set in rural Tamil Nadu in the 1990s, explores gender identity, masculinity and acceptance. A dialogue that drew particular criticism was, "Innum 10 varshathula naanga dhaan normal, indha ooru ungala dhaan kevalama paakum" (In another 10 years, we will be the norm, and this town will look down on you). One user wrote, "Talking about LGBTQ+ is fine, but forcing it on people isn't. It's not a good direction to go," while another posted, "Guys, please don't encourage these types of Movies.
