India, July 30 -- A recent notice by Delhi University's St. Stephen's College asking 'junior members' not to wear shorts on campus has ignited a debate. After the notice was put up on July 26, some students allegedly turned up in shorts on Tuesday, in a show of dissent against the dress code. "This is surprising because I don't think wearing shorts in summer should be against any dress code," says a first-year student, requesting anonymity. Another adds, "For me and my friends, who have just completed our schools where we wore uniforms, it feels like we're going backwards. Once you're an adult and in college, you don't expect your expression in any form, even the way you dress, to be curtailed. It takes away from the whole experience of finally being out in the world and beginning life as a college student." Students claimed they were unhappy with the restriction and alleged that the dress code applied to senior students as well. However, principal Susan Elias, who took charge last month, says the rule is not new. "This institution has been there for 145 years. So, I don't want to remove it (a rule) because I've not been in this system, and I want everybody to come together and decide what to start, what to stop, what to continue, and what to consider. It's a closed-door discussion between us on what we want to keep. We have to change, and it will happen. But it's too early," she tells us....
