Shoojit defends National Award jury, says you can't question who they award
India, Aug. 12 -- Filmmaker Shoojit Sircar is on the jury of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) selecting the Best Short Films, and calls judging something as subjective as cinema "very difficult". This comes after several commentators expressed surprise at Shah Rukh Khan being named Best Actor for Jawan and The Kerala Story winning Best Director and Best Cinematography (both 2023) at the National Film Awards.
"There is no point debating this from the outside. We might agree to disagree on many things, but what matters is who the jury is and what their sensibilities are. Because that jury is going to be your final word, and you leave it to their sensibility. You can't question what award they have given. Rather, should question that before they start," he opines.
The 58-year-old also explains the process and parameters followed by a jury: "Before we start, we tell everyone about the elements they should take into consideration - the voice and vision of the director, films that bring social change, and leave a long-lasting impact; technicalities like cinematography, editing, direction, actors, etc."
Harking back to when his own film Sardar Udham (2021) was not shortlisted at film festivals, Shoojit shares, "When the panorama selection (for the 2021 International Film Festival of India) didn't happen, I was asked the same things. I'll say what I said then: 'Whatever the jury decides, I have to accept'."...
