Ranjith claims innocence in sexual assault case; FEFKA takes action
India, April 3 -- Malayalam filmmaker Ranjith Balakrishnan was arrested on Tuesday in an attempted sexual assault case and remanded to 14 days' judicial custody. He was taken into custody in Idukki after a female actor accused him of calling her into a caravan and attempting to assault her. Ranjith has denied the allegations, calling them "false", and said he will prove his innocence in the case while being taken inside the sub-jail in Kochi. His lawyer is preparing to move a bail plea.
The Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) has recommended suspending his membership in its directors' and writers' unions. General Secretary B Unnikrishnan said no complaint was filed with the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) regarding the incident.
Police said the survivor was traumatised and sought counselling before filing the complaint. Kochi City Police Commissioner S Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar confirmed a Special Investigation Team was formed and that witnesses were present on set.
Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan said "proceedings appear to be moving properly," while Culture Minister Saji Cherian assured support for the victim.
