India, Nov. 1 -- Not long ago, a diagnosis of bone or soft tissue cancer often meant one thing: amputation. Removing the limb was considered the safest way to eliminate cancer and prevent its spread. While this approach saved lives, it also meant a permanent loss of mobility, independence, and confidence. Today, advances in orthopaedic oncology and musculoskeletal surgery have changed this story. In many cases, surgeons can now remove the tumour while preserving the limb, offering patients not only survival but also a chance at a fuller, active life. Limb-sparing or limb-salvage surgery involves removing the cancerous tumour along with a margin of healthy tissue while keeping the rest of the limb intact. The affected bone or joint is then reconstructed with a prosthetic implant, a bone graft, or a combination of both. This option is now available for bone cancers, such as osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma, as well as certain soft tissue sarcomas. Several medical breakthroughs have made limb preservation a reality: After tumour removal, reconstruction ensures the limb is not only preserved but also functional. Surgeons may use: Recovery typically involves physiotherapy, which helps patients regain strength, flexibility, and coordination. Many return to school, work, or even sports after treatment. Children, in particular, benefit from limb-sparing surgery, as it supports physical growth, emotional well-being, and normal daily routines. Adults, too, benefit greatly from maintaining independence and mobility, which improves both physical and mental health. In some cases, where cancer involves major blood vessels, nerves, or extensive tissue, amputation may still be the safest option. Even then, advanced prosthetics and rehabilitation help patients lead active, fulfilling lives. The shift from amputation to limb preservation is one of the most hopeful developments in cancer care. While saving lives remains the priority, preserving mobility and dignity is now equally valued. For many patients, modern surgery offers the chance to walk out of the hospital with both life and limb intact- a victory worth celebrating....
