Maang Tikka 2.0: Tradition just got trendier

nce the crown jewel of every Bollywood bride in the late '90s and early 2000s, the maang tikka has found its way back into the fashion spotlight - but with a Gen Z twist. What was once paired with ornate lehengas is now being reimagined with strapless blouses, cocktail sarees, and even western silhouettes. From Diwali parties to destination weddings, this nostalgic accessory is sparkling its way into the new-age glam scene.
"Women are mostly styling their maang tikkas with western outfits now, giving it a fusion twist," explains designer Rina Dhaka, adding, "During the 2000s, traditional lehenga-cholis were becoming more contemporary, and the maang tikka fit right in. The current resurgence stems from Gen Z's fixation with the '90s, they want to relive those fashion moments."
The secret, say stylists, lies in balance. "Opt for small, delicate tikkas with single strands or simple gemstones like solitaires or pearls that blend seamlessly with western wear," advises stylist Isha Bhansali. "You can even pair them with a slip dress or cocktail outfit to elevate the look," she adds.
But if you're planning to recreate this retro-glam moment, there's one style tip to remember. "Avoid the side part that was popular in the '90s," cautions makeup artist Ashima Kapoor, and adds, "A sleek middle part gives the maang tikka a cleaner, more modern edge this season."...
