Limbless para archer Payal on winning gold: Abhi mujhe bahut aage jaana hai
India, April 8 -- A quadruple amputee and the world's first limbless archer, Payal Nag, scripted history on April 4 by winning gold at the recent World Archery Para Series in Bangkok. In an all-Indian showdown, the 18-year-old defeated her fellow team member and World No 1 Sheetal Devi in the Women's Compound Individual event.
For the Odisha-born archer, however, this milestone is just the start. As she puts it: "Abhi toh mujhe bahut aage jaana hai". She adds, "Yeh medal toh bas shuruat hai. Medal lene ke thodi der baad hi main bhool bhi gayi thi ki maine kuch jeeta hai. I want to achieve big things for India, and nothing will be bigger than a gold at the next Paralympics."
Payal, whose father is a mason, first grabbed national attention with a silver medal at the Khelo India Games last year. Since then, beyond refining her skills, she has made a conscious lifestyle change.
"Skills pe toh kaam chalta rehta hai par mind ko bhi fresh rakhna zaroori hai. Iske liye maine phone use karna bilkul chhorh diya hai. Main Reels scroll nahin karti hun because I don't want to lose my focus (from my game)," she shares.
Having looked up to Sheetal since taking up the sport, going up against the champion wasn't easy for the teenager. "It was a special moment," recalls Payal, adding that it became even sweeter when Sheetal pushed her wheelchair to the podium to help her collect her gold medal, while she herself received silver.
"I have learnt a lot in life from Sheetal. But, when you compete against your opponent, friendship stays in the background. And once the competition is over, the bond stays unbreakable," she signs off....
