India, Sept. 22 -- From lauki and sabudana khichdi to kheer and golgappas, India's Prime Ministers' food memories took centre stage at the launch of The Prime Minister's Table: Delicacies and Diplomacies from the Era of Nehru to Modi on September 20 in Delhi. The evening brought together former PMs' families, political figures and Delhi's social set over family recipes and stories from behind the highest office. Authors Purabi Shridhar and Sanghita Singh use food to look beyond the PMs' political personas. "We wanted to get away from that. No politics, let's get beyond that and find out in totality what they were like, what their homes were like, and what better tool than food," said Shridhar. Singh added, "We wanted to shift that conversation and understand who they really were." At the event, guest of honour, Jayant Chaudhary recalled childhood visits to his grandfather, former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, where lauki was a staple. Anil Shastri shared memories of his father, Lal Bahadur Shastri, including how sabudana khichdi became a Monday staple after his 1965 appeal to families to skip one meal a week. Memories of Atal Bihari Vajpayee's love for fish, golgappas and desserts offered further glimpses into the people behind the office....
