India, May 30 -- In corporate corridors of India, looking 'professional' is still equated with long sleeves, ties, blazers and formal shoes, even with temperature crossing 40degC. That is why a Reddit post titled 'Ties and formal shoes as office dress code in India make absolutely no sense' has struck a nerve online. From law interns to finance professionals, young workers say that the problem is not just the outfit, but the commute. "With temperatures being so high, wearing formals feels suffocating, especially in a crowded commute," says Nior, a 24-year-old law student interning in Delhi, who is required to wear formals and a blazer. He adds, "In Kerala, advocates have some reprieve. Due to the heatwave, black coats and gowns have been made optional for advocates in district courts till the end of May." Zoya, a 22-year-old research assistant in Gurugram says HR warned her after she swapped formal shoes for sneakers during a two-hour commute. "We have to wear crisp formals including heels. There is no reprieve," she says. Simran, 27-year-old Delhi-based CA, adds, "In leadership roles, the dress code is more than mandatory, it's expected in front of clients and for meetings. It would be nice to have alternatives in summer." As global temperatures rise, the question is simple: should dress codes bend before workers break?...
