India, Sept. 1 -- Writer and Peepli Live co-director Mahmood Farooqui unveiled his prison memoir, The Tihar Players at the CD Deshmukh Auditorium at India International Centre, New Delhi, on Sunday. Offering an account of his incarceration after being charged with and subsequently acquitted of rape, the book also chronicles how he established a drama class behind bars. A satirical performance by Farooqui's former Tihar inmates, all trained by him during their time in jail, depicted hierarchies of the prison system. Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah did a reading from the book, and senior advocate and politician Kapil Sibal also delivered a speech. Reflecting on how his time in prison changed his perspective on art and theatre, Farooqui shared, "Prison helped me go sober, in multiple ways. The intoxication of autonomy vanished. The whole enterprise of art and creation is simply not as appealing in the same self-absorbed way once you've been inside."."...
