India, Oct. 29 -- Fans of singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh in Australia were left miffed after being denied entry to his concert in the country on October 26 at Sydney's Parramatta Stadium for carrying a kirpan. The kirpan, a small dagger, holds deep religious significance for Sikhs and they are not permitted to remove it under any circumstances. The incident occurred at the 41-year-old's first stadium show in Australia, held at Parramatta Stadium in Western Sydney. Among those denied entry were Paramvir Singh Bimwal and his wife Sona. "It's really disappointing to be here, and we were told right at the entrance to move aside," he told ABC News. According to him, security officials offered to store the kirpan in a box and return it after the show, but he refused, calling the demand "very disrespectful and hurtful". In a statement, the NSW Police said, "Officers spoke with the male patron who declined to cloak the Kirpan. He was then directed from the stadium and left without incident." Under NSW law, carrying a knife in public is illegal, with a few exceptions, one being for "genuine religious purposes".
