Couple stages daring proposal atop Empire State Building, arrested
India, July 3 -- Two Russian daredevil climbers were arrested on Wednesday after scaling the antenna of New York City's Empire State Building and staging a marriage proposal 1,454 ft above the ground.
Angela Nikolau, 33, and Ivan Beerkus, 32, climbed to the top of the landmark's restricted spire shortly after noon. They unfurled a banner that read, "When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace," before sharing a kiss.
The pair then climbed down to a lower platform, where Beerkus went down on one knee and proposed with an engagement ring. Nikolau accepted, and the two descended together.
Officers from the New York Police Department's Emergency Service Unit escorted the pair down before arresting them. They face charges including burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, trespass and disorderly conduct. Authorities are currently investigating how the pair accessed the restricted area.
