'Lost a role to someone with more PR spottings'
India, Aug. 16 -- Actor Barkha Singh has had a busy run with two recent web releases, Criminal Justice: A Family Matter and Lafangey. "It's a good feeling, especially when the industry is going through a lull. Though it would've been better if they were spaced out to stay relevant longer," the 33-year-old tells us.
In a stark shift from her "sweet, girl-next-door" image, the actor played a lawyer opposite Pankaj Tripathi in Criminal Justice. "It was intimidating to join a franchise midway, and this was a no-makeup, no-glam role, so it was a double gamble for me," she admits.
Though she was appreciated for this outing, she opens up on the struggle to even get her foot in the door: "So many times, I've called casting directors asking to audition, but if it's not a glam role, they don't even consider me. Casting toh door ki baat hai, sometimes I can't even get an audition."
And while OTT is considered a space for experimentation, Barkha says it can pigeonhole too. "It gives you anxiety when you can't explore, no matter how good your audition was."
She recalls being replaced in a project despite being finalised. "I was selected for a role, my fittings were done, but at the last minute, I was replaced by someone topical because of their PR spottings and some controversy... The platform felt they'd get more eyeballs. I can't play the controversy game, but those who do, get many offers," she ends....
