Woman, son die in roof collapse
Bathinda, July 15 -- A 40-year-old woman and her teenage son were killed, while her two daughters were injured when the roof of their single-storey house collapsed in Talwandi Sabo town of Bathinda district on Monday night, police said.
The deceased were identified as Veer Pal Kaur and her son, Arshdeep Singh, 14.
The injured daughters, Sanampreet Kaur, 15, and Khushpreet Kaur, 18, are undergoing treatment at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bathinda. Both are stated to be stable and out of danger. The deceased were living in one room of the house while the injured were in the adjoining room.
Officials said that Sanmanpreet suffered a leg fracture, while Khushpreet sustained an arm fracture.
Veer Pal's husband, Dharam Singh, works at a sewage treatment plant in Talwandi Sabo as an outsourced worker and was sleeping outside the house when the incident occurred.
Talwandi Sabo station house officer (SHO) Amrik Singh said that the house was in a dilapidated condition and the family was sleeping when the roof gave way around 11.30 pm.
SHO said that when the roof slab collapsed, Veer Pal and Arshdeep were crushed to death, while two others had a miraculous escape.
A neighbour of the victims, Darshan Singh, told reporters that the family has been living in poverty and couldn't afford to repair their ancestral house.
"Their economic condition was so poor that they were unable to repair the house despite its poor condition. We appeal to the state government and social organisations to extend support to the bereaved family," he said....
