When tricity streets turnedinto a meme template
India, Aug. 20 -- As intense showers lashed Chandigarh and adjoining Mohali, Panchkula and Kharar on Tuesday, pictures and videos of commuters wading through flooded roads and struggling with stranded vehicles quickly found their way online. Chandigarh, often celebrated as City Beautiful, became the butt of jokes as residents compared its waterlogged spots to swimming pools, water parks and even Sukhna Lake.
One user titled a Reel on Instagram: 'Strait of Hormuz (Chandigarh Branch)', which garnered 2.35 lakh views. Another showed 'Sea view apartments in Chandigarh', whereas a post calling the rain-hit city to 'Chandigarh Lake' also crossed 2.4 lakh views.
The humour mills were not limited to Chandigarh as residents of Mohali also joined in. Commuters posted about inundated roads, traffic jams and the daily struggle of getting to work despite the downpour. One post summed up the mood with the line: "Thodi si baarish hone par (Mohali) Goa ban jata hai."
Behind the jokes, however, was a serious civic concern. Chandigarh recorded 72.2mm rain in just two hours, its second heaviest spell of the monsoon season so far.
The downpour left several roads knee-deep in water and disrupted traffic across the city. Mohali, Zirakpur, Kharar and New Chandigarh too witnessed extensive waterlogging, with residents reporting clogged drains, flooded homes and commercial establishments, and severe traffic disruption....
