When Harry Met Sally phone scenes inspired by calls with Rob Reiner: Billy Crystal
India, April 19 -- A
ctor-comedian Billy Crystal, known for films such as When Harry Met Sally (1989) and Monsters, Inc. (2001), has reflected on his long-standing friendship with late filmmaker Rob Reiner.
In a recent episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Crystal recalled the making of the now cult classic When Harry Met Sally, which was directed by Reiner.
The 78-year-old said that the iconic phone call sequences between Harry and Sally (Meg Ryan) were drawn from his frequent conversations with Reiner during a difficult phase in the latter's personal life. "There are a lot of moments between Meg and I that are really Rob and I," Crystal said.
"When something good happens, or 'Isn't that crazy?' I want to pick up the phone and call and say, 'Did you see?' because that's what we would do. We could talk about everything," he added.
The duo eventually became close friends in real-life, and Crystal described Reiner as "hilarious, devoted, opinionated, in the best way".
The actor also recalled, "He was going through a tough divorce from (late actor-director) Penny Marshall at the time, and we were on the phone constantly. There were moments where we'd be watching a movie together, like Casablanca (1942), and we would go back and forth." Interestingly, in When Harry Met Sally, the title characters end up in their separate bedrooms, both watching Casablanca on their TV sets as they bicker about the meaning of the film.
Rob Reiner and his wife, photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner, were found stabbed to death in California in December last year. Their son, Nick Reiner, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder. ani...
