What does 'cywyddau' mean?
India, May 31 -- Indian-origin contestant Shrey Parikh left viewers stunned at the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee when he breezed through the Welsh word cywyddau.
Parikh spelt 32 words in 90 seconds, including cywyddau, and defeated runner-up Ishaan Gupta of New Jersey, who managed 25.
His winning word was the medical term bromocriptine. But it was cywyddau that has left social media spiralling.
"Did he just throw letters?" one X user joked, while another wrote, "I can't even pronounce 'Cywyddau' in my head, let alone spell it. Congrats to Shrey!"
According to Merriam-Webster, cywyddau refers to a Welsh verse form written in couplets, sometimes triplets, with rhyme and cynghanedd.
Britannica notes that the form was developed in 14th-century South Wales, revived later, and is still used by modern Welsh poets who prefer strict forms....
