Vijay, Rashmika on the pressure to do revealing scenes
India, Oct. 23 -- The debate over the objectification of women in films has resurfaced after criticism of Janhvi Kapoor's portrayal in Telugu film Peddi, particularly its camera angles and a scene involving a kiss without consent. Amid the discussion, actor couple Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna have spoken about the pressure performers face to wear revealing costumes or do scenes they are uncomfortable with.
On Koffee With Karan Season 9, hosted by filmmaker Karan Johar, Rashmika said actors should be able to set boundaries even when commercial films demand revealing outfits. "There are some things which I am not okay with. I know some characters need some things like a bikini or like that. But, even in that, I will say I am not comfortable with that exposing and skin show. I am not that kind of a person," the 30-year-old said, adding that directors she chooses to work with generally respect her preferences.
Vijay acknowledged that expressing discomfort can be difficult. "But, it is still challenging to have these conversations. It is hard," added the 37-year-old.
Rashmika said the industry needs to make it easier for actors to voice concerns. "Even I find it hard. Sometimes I want to say 'I don't want to do it'. But it takes a lot of conversations with Vijay like, 'I really want to say this,' and he is like, ' You can. Of course you should," she expressed.
Rashmika's comments come amid criticism of Janhvi Kapoor's portrayal in Peddi, starring Ram Charan. Viewers objected to camera angles focusing on her waist and cleavage, as well as a scene in which Ram's character kisses her without consent. The backlash prompted director Buchi Babu Sana to apologise and announce changes to the controversial scenes.HTC...
