Chandigarh, July 11 -- Among eight union territories, Chandigarh has recorded the highest increase in the prevalence of underweight children below the age of five years, according to the national family health survey (NFHS) 2023-24, released recently by the Union ministry of health and family welfare. In the 2019-20 survey, prevalence of underweight children in Chandigarh was 20.6%, which increased to 31.6% in the 2023-24 data. In overall prevalence rate of underweight children below five, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu ranks first at 41.3%, followed by Chandigarh on the second number with 31.6%. In the UT that has a fully literate urban population, the increased prevalence rate does not point to any one particular reason though it does point to hindrance in child's growth and making them more prone to infections.
