Chandigarh, July 1 -- The UT administration launched a drive to bring around 30,000 unregistered micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) under the official fold, a step that could substantially widen access to credit but also increase regulatory oversight. The initiative, rolled out under the Centre-backed raising and accelerating MSME performance (RAMP) programme, seeks to identify and formalise thousands of businesses currently operating outside the government system. These include small manufacturers, traders and service providers spread across industrial areas and commercial markets in the city. Officials said the drive will focus on providing free Udyam registration-the government's official recognition for MSMEs-enabling businesses to access institutional loans and schemes such as MUDRA, CGTMSE and PMEGP. To implement the programme, the administration has engaged Forvis Mazars LLP, whose survey teams will conduct field visits to identify unregistered units and facilitate on-the-spot registration. The door-to-door outreach marks one of the most aggressive attempts yet to map Chandigarh's informal business ecosystem.
