US invokes RICO law against two syndicates
New Delhi/Washington, July 9 -- The United States has invoked its most powerful anti-organised crime law, Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organisations Act, or RICO, which was once used to take down the Mafia bosses, against the Lawrence Bishnoi and Jaggu Bhagwanpuria syndicates for running a sophisticated transnational criminal enterprise across America, Europe, Canada and other countries that indulged in political assassinations, shootings, extortion, narcotics and human smuggling with the help of thousands of operatives.
The 1970 federal law has been used against an India-based syndicate for the first time. RICO allows prosecutors to target larger networks and indict anyone in an organisation with racketeering activity and attracts 20 years in jail....
