UK, US trade pacts in final stages: Officials
New Delhi, June 2 -- As India is engaged with the US and the UK separately giving final touches to the trade deals this week, officials said large part of the agreement with the US is already finalised and British trade secretary Peter Kyle is in Delhi to bring the India-UK free trade agreement into force.
Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal on Monday said India and the US have finalised most elements of the proposed interim bilateral trade agreement (BTA), and the two sides will focus their discussions on remaining few issues from June 2-4 in New Delhi. Goyal's comments came days after US ambassador Sergio Gor said that India-US trade deal was 99% done. HT reported it on Saturday. Meanwhile, a British government statement on Monday highlighted an expected meeting between Kyle and Goyal in New Delhi on Tuesday "to discuss bringing the FTA into force as quickly as possible", calling it "a priority" for both governments.
People in the know, requesting anonymity, however, said that there are no specific deadlines for these deals as finalisation of agreements and their operationalisation dependson various factors. India has been engaged with both the UK and the US to finalise the trade deals that are "mutually" beneficial.
A US embassy spokesperson confirmed that a US delegation led by Assistant US Trade Representative Brendan Lynch is visiting India from June 1-4 to continue discussions toward finalising a US-India trade agreement.
According to the UK government statement, as globalconflicts, including the continued blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, are causing economic shocks across the world'sbiggest economies, Kyle sees advancing the UK's vital economic partnership with India as a key priority, with significant mutual benefits....
