Haldwani, June 18 -- Cattle smugglers allegedly opened fire on a team of the Bovine Protection Squad during a raid conducted on information about the processing of suspected banned meat in the Gandhi Colony area of Gadarpur in Udham Singh Nagar district in the early hours of Wednesday, police said, adding that two accused were arrested, while two others managed to flee. A large quantity of suspected banned meat was also seized and sent for laboratory examination, police said. According to Pankaj Belwal, In-charge, Udham Singh Nagar Bovine Protection Squad, information was received around 3.30 am that meat suspected to be from a prohibited bovine animal was being processed in Gandhi Colony of Gadarpur. "Acting on the tip-off, the team reached the location and attempted to intercept the vehicle. In an effort to evade arrest, the occupants of the vehicle fired two rounds at the team and tried to escape by reversing the car," said Belwal. During the escape attempt, the vehicle rammed into the house of a local resident, Harishankar, causing damage to the property. The police team immediately pursued the suspects and succeeded in apprehending one of the accused, while two others escaped from the spot. Officials said samples of the seized meat were collected and sent for laboratory testing.
