Trapped in mangled car on e-way, couple & child die
Gurugram, Oct. 30 -- A couple and their five-year-old daughter were killed, and their two other children suffered injuries after their car rammed into the rear of an allegedly illegally parked private bus on Delhi-Mumbai Expressway near Sohna in Gurugram early Thursday, police said, adding that it took almost an hour to extricate the wreckage of the car from under the bus.
A case was registered against the unidentified bus driver for causing death by negligence and a manhunt launched to nab him, police said.
The victims were identified as Bambam Prasad Sah, 38, his wife Rupa Devi, 35, and their daughter, residents of Delhi's Rajokri area. Their 11-year-old son and one-year-old daughter miraculously survived the crash after getting trapped in between seats and the wrecked chassis of the car, police added. The incident occurred near Dhunela village around 3.15 am, when the family was returning home in a Maruti Suzuki Swift after offering prayers at Mehandipuri Balaji temple in Rajasthan's Dausa district. Sah, who was originally from Bhadra in Banka district of Bihar and had settled in Rajokri for the last 15 years, worked as a cab operator in Delhi-NCR and had borrowed his friend's car to take his family for the temple visit. Police said preliminary investigation indicated the car rammed into the stationary bus parked on the side of main carriageway, which was hardly 200 metres from the cloverleaf intersection connecting the Sohna elevated road.
Soon after the incident, commuters alerted the police control room following which teams of emergency response vehicles (ERV) rushed to the spot. A police officer involved in the rescue efforts said they could not immediately pull out the car nearly half of which had wedged into the rear of the bus.
"It was after the mangled remains of the car was pulled out with a crane, we realised that the boy and one of his two sisters have miraculously survived the crash with mere bruises and cuts," the officer said.
Fire officer Devender Kumar said they used hand-held hydraulic shear-cutter equipment to cut away the mangled chassis or create space between the crumpled metal frame. "After almost an hour-long combined effort with police, Ayush and his sister were safely pulled out from the car wreck. They sustained non-fatal injuries," he added. Inspector Satpal Singh said the ERV officers kept interacting with boy to boost his courage while the rescue efforts were underway....
