New Delhi, Oct. 6 -- The Centre has notified the appointment of three high court chief justices as Supreme Court judges, a week after their elevation was recommended by the Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant. The appointments take the Supreme Court's strength to 37, including the CJI, and increase the number of women judges to three. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal confirmed the appointments in a post on X. "In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President of India is pleased to appoint the following Chief Justices of high courts as judges of the Supreme Court of India," he said. The appointees are Justice Sunita Agarwal, Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court; Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court; and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court. The Collegium recommended their elevation on September 28. Besides the CJI, it comprises Justices Vikram Nath, BV Nagarathna, MM Sundresh and PS Narasimha. Justice Agarwal, elevated to the bench from the Allahabad High Court in November 2011, became Gujarat High Court Chief Justice in July 2023. Justice Upadhyaya, whose parent high court is Allahabad, was elevated in November 2011. He became Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court in July 2023 and was transferred to the Delhi High Court in January 2025. He will retire in June 2030. Justice Singh, whose parent high court is Jharkhand, was elevated in 2012. He served as Chief Justice of Tripura and later became Telangana High Court Chief Justice in July 2025.
