Ludhiana, Nov. 1 -- A 27-year-old man, arrested in connection with a theft case earlier in the day, hanged himself inside the lock-up of the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (SBS Nagar) police post on late Friday afternoon, officials said. The deceased was arrested for the September 12 theft of iron pipes from a factory for which an FIR was registered with the Dugri police station. According to officials, he reportedly tore the binding of a blanket provided to him and used it to hang himself from the grill of the lock-up. Confirming the incident, additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP-2) Karanveer Singh said, "After his arrest on Friday, the accused was kept in the lockup where he hanged himself by tearing off the blanket binding. Since the weather has turned cold, blankets are provided to detainees." The officer added that prima facie findings indicate that he was allegedly struggling with drug addiction and may have taken the extreme step due to withdrawal symptoms. "His narcotics test report is awaited," he said. A magisterial inquiry is expected to be initiated as per the protocol in custodial deaths.
