Sukhdev Namdhari, six others acquitted by Mohali court
Mohali, April 9 -- A local court here acquitted Sukhdev Singh Namdhari along with six others in a case related to using forged documents to acquire the licence for the firearm allegedly used in the November 2012 killing of liquor baron Ponty Chadha. The detailed order is awaited.
The case, registered in 2012, alleged that Namdhari and his relatives used fake ration cards, passports and local residence documents to secure arms licences. The court acquitted Namdhari, Lakhwinder Singh, Baldev Singh, Gursewak Singh, Sher Singh, Kulwinder Singh, and ASI Gurcharan Singh (posted at Kurali police station at the time of the alleged offence). Defence counsel HS Dhanoa said that the investigators failed to establish that the accused had procured the documents by fraudulent means.
The case was registered after a probe led by then principal secretary (home) DS Bains, following the Ponty Chadha, Hardeep Chadha double murder on November 17, 2012 in Delhi. Reportedly, Namdhari had used addresses in Mohali and Amritsar to obtain weapons licences.
The preliminary inquiry found that Namdhari and his brother Baldev Singh had allegedly obtained arms licences from Kurali using a local address. Based on these findings, police registered a case in December 2012 at the State Crime Police Station, Phase 4, Mohali, under Sections 196, 197, 198, 199, 200, 420, 465, 468, 471, 120-B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and relevant sections of the Arms Act.
